Student Alumni Meet


NIT Durgapur has a profound numbers of Alumni dignified at various distinct positions across the globe. That’s why, The Centre for Alumni affairs and International Relations (CAAIR) is in effort of consolidating these folks under the same shade for the betterment of institute and its students. Thus, Student Alumni Meet (SAM) is the thought of that. It invites the Alumni, delegates of different batches to share their experiences, spreading immense knowledge on their fields, interchanging ideas with students. These activities play a significant role bridging the relations between Alumni and students. Not only the students get enriched with knowledge and ideas but the institute also becomes glorified nationally with its Alumni. Apart from the SAMs at institute courtyard, the regional meets are becoming popular day after day. Moreover, the Student Alumni Meet encourages the implementation of plenty of flagship programmes like Mentorship Program, Eminent Guest Talk Show, International Student Alumni Meet and Interaction over video calling and many more. During the Student Alumni Meet, alumni and students from all fields participate in various events which are aimed at helping students in overcoming uncertainties regarding their career choices and their lives beyond the campus. Ultimately, Student Alumni Meets (SAMs) connect students and Alumni at very close to heart and cementing the relationship for a prosperous future.

"WHAT NEXT"

On January 4, 2020, a Student-Alumni Meet was organised, that aimed to help the students regarding various career choices. The meet was names "What's next". Eminent alumni who participated in the meeting were: Prof. Bikramjit Basu, Mr. Arijit Bonnerjee, Mr. Subhendu Das, FRSC Amitava Mazumder, and Mr. Kamalesh Singh. Being from different backgrounds, these alumni were successful in shedding some light oh the various career paths that lay ahead of the students, and ways to excel in each of them.

Ahead of pursuing MBA he has work experience at Wacker Metroark Chemical Pvt.Ltd. He told us the way to continue the journey of an engineer in 4 years to reach their goals. Mr. Sandeep Engineering lIfe:He entered the campus of NIT Durgapur for the first time in July, 2014. He was impressed with the large football ground near the entrance gate of the college. In the first semester he was taught with the subjects of 12th standard which are mostly irrelevant to engineering subjects. After he understood the reason behind the syllabus, the institute gave him the time to settle in the new place with about 900 new strangers. Some people can easily adjust to the situations but all are not the same. Some of them should go through their hard times in life. His second year was the best time to develop a career in his stream. Third year was a little awful as the subject went deeper. In the third he had done 2 months of internship, it was industrial training. In summer he prepared for the CAT exam. He gave up preparing for CAT within 4 months as placements are starting. He decided to focus on the placements. After being rejected by 13 companies, he was placed into Metroark Chemicals Pvt.Ltd. Mr.Sandeep said maintaining a good G.P.A plays a crucial role for those who want to pursue higher studies.He mentioned to the persons who are confused with their goals with a statement “Try to focus on your goals that you want to achieve rather others are achieving” About Engineering in view of Mr. Sandeep, “Engineering gives ways that you could not think”

He got his Undergraduate Degree from NIT Durgapur and Postgraduate Degree from IIT Bombay. In 2016, at a seminar he met one of the alumni of NIT Durgapur, he gave him the knowledge of ISRO and told him that ISRO recruits metallurgy students too. From this, he stressed the need for good networking for everyone. He said networking helps in an unbelievable way. He strongly believes that he is in his position right now due to networking. In 2017, he placed into Hindustan Copper and then started preparing to get into ISRO. And he is finally in ISRO. He said that ISRO is consistently holding its position because of its hard work in the last 40 years. He also mentioned that the main success of ISRO is not leaving at their failures but they take time to analyze the mistakes and come back. That made the people who criticized SLV as a sea-loving vehicle to how Great they talk about ISRO today. He also shared some of the interesting topics he worked on in ISRO. ISRO is planning to take 3 Astronauts into space through launch vehicles and keep them there and take them back. In this project, he and his team are working to qualify the existing metals which best suits to make traveling planes. And ISRO is working on Semi Cryogenic Engine, Electric propulsions. In 2019 he joined as Senior Scientist in Bioprocess R&D. Currently he is working as Principal Scientist at Pfizer. He explained briefly about production of gene therapy vectors. He stressed that complex real world problems are usually solved via collaboration. The opportunities for chemical engineers are endless in domains like chemical industries, electronics, oil and gas, food products, pharmaceuticals, consumer products. He said that to plan a career strategically one should ask themselves that if they could choose whatever they wanted to do what kind of roles do they think that they could enjoy the most.
